Unveiling the Art of Intimacy Coordination: Adeeb Razzouk's Journey in the Australian Live Performance Scene
Trust and emotional well-being take centre stage in Adeeb's world of intimacy coordination, illuminating paths for performers to authentically shine on stage.
Adeeb Razzouk, a Syrian multidisciplinary artist, brings a unique blend of experiences and talents to the vibrant creative scene of Sydney's Inner West. With a background in IT and a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Acting from The Higher Institute of Dramatic Art in Syria, Adeeb's journey into the heart of the Australian live performance community is characterised by innovation and cultural fusion.
Upon arriving in Sydney, Adeeb found himself drawn to the Inner West community, where he discovered ample opportunities to connect with fellow artists and engage with a multitude of creative works. "Living amongst fellow creatives fuels my own artistic spirit," he explains. "The energy of this community is contagious, a constant reminder that art isn't just something you observe, it's something you live."
Adeeb's upbringing in Syria, steeped in rich cultural history, continues to influence his artistic endeavours. "Growing up in Aleppo and moving to Damascus gave me a valuable opportunity to live and work artistically between these two big cultural influences and their diverse communities," he reflects. Collaborating with a cohort of artists from various backgrounds, Adeeb finds inspiration in the intersection of tradition and modernity.
One of Adeeb's most intriguing roles is his emerging journey as an Intimacy Coordinator. Inspired by a fellow cast member during a production of Hamlet, Adeeb delved into this field to address the inherent challenges within the performing arts community.
"At the table read of one of my first Australian productions, a Tim Burton-inspired stage production of Hamlet, a fellow cast member mentioned that she was an intimacy coordinator, and I had to learn more," Adeeb recalls. "As an actor, I'd never received specific training for performing or simulating intimacy on stage or screen. This lack of education, particularly within the acting community I come from, ignited my curiosity and activism."
At the company where he works, Key Intimate Scenes (KIS), intimacy coordination extends far beyond sexual scenes, Adeeb emphasises. Considering simulated violence and torture from a safety and emotional well-being standpoint is crucial.
"I wanted to empower performers to navigate vulnerable scenes with confidence," Adeeb explains. "Fostering trust and emotional well-being is key. Intimacy coordination is about more than just choreography. It's about creating a safe and supportive environment for actors to explore their craft."
Witnessing actors navigate their work with newfound confidence through his guidance is the most rewarding aspect of his journey.
Adeeb's artistic endeavours extend beyond intimacy coordination. His exploration of light as a multimedia artist began in 2017 and evolved into a captivating video series titled "LightRoom Show," created during the COVID-19 lockdown. This project showcased Adeeb's adaptability and creativity in leveraging available technology to continue making art.
Looking ahead, Adeeb is developing a stage production titled “View from the High Citadel,” exploring themes of memory and identity. This work, showcased at the PACT Emerging Artist Residency Programme 2023, reflects Adeeb's commitment to storytelling and cultural exploration.
Apart from his creative endeavours, Adeeb invites audiences to explore his work on his website and social media channels. "I believe in the power of collaboration and community," Adeeb concludes. "Together, we can amplify diverse voices and perspectives in the Australian live performance scene."
