IWCN X HOPSTERS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: Lisa Kotoulas

Lisa Kotoulas: If You Think You Know Yourself Think Again - The Problem with Self Identity and Memory April 2 - 30th

Presented is a sample of what belongs to a larger body of work that investigates identity as something built from memory — and memory as something that shifts. What we carry forward from the past is never fixed; it is shaped by what we remember, what we misremember, and what changes each time we return to it.

In Memory Pentaptych, each canvas is formed through the act of recall itself. Parts are lost, altered, accumulated. What emerges isn't sequence but drift — recognition slowly loosening, certainty thinning.

The exhibition doesn't offer resolution. It asks you to sit with the idea that self-knowledge is always partial, always in motion — and that noticing this might be enough.

Lisa Kotoulas completed an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Economics at UNSW in 1992, followed by a Master of Art (Painting) at UNSW Art & Design in 2012. Her academic background continues to inform a practice that balances critical thinking with emotional inquiry.

Kotoulas' work centres on questions of identity — particularly how it shifts in response to loss and change. Death and memory are recurring presences, not as fixed subjects but as ongoing conditions that shape how the living make sense of themselves. Humour and playfulness thread through even the most serious work, creating space for reflection without demanding resolution.
