Don’t believe the HYPE features works that are shaped by the day-to-day experience of living inside consumer spectacle while trying to process and deflect it. The series exaggerates, seduces, and performs only to turn back on itself, exposing the emotional labour of navigating spectacle, cultural duality on stolen land, and gendered violence while holding tenderness and bitterness in the same breath. Familiar symbols are amplified and unsettled, inviting viewers to question the narratives that surround them and the realities they move through daily in a culture shaped by hype. Don’t believe it.
jda is a digital artist exploring the experience of cultural duality, the tragedy and comedy of capital and consumer culture, and new and innovative ways to deflect the male gaze. These themes cross over and intersect using familiar cultural signifiers and multimedia techniques to engage audiences.
