Robyn Backen’s Creative Wisdom and the Buzz of Our July Meet-Up
I'm still buzzing from the energy at our July Inner West Creative Network meet-up! It's always inspiring to see so many passionate people come together, share their projects and ideas and genuinely support one another.
That said, leading up to the meet-up, my energy was pretty low. A career setback had me wondering if I could really show up to a networking night with the same enthusiasm I usually bring. Honestly, all I wanted to do was stay home and isolate myself from the community. But as the night kicked off, everything changed. It reminded me just how important connection is—especially when career setbacks, particularly in the arts, can feel so challenging.
Being surrounded by so many passionate, creative people reminded me why this network means so much. The energy in the room lifted me up and reignited that spark.
We were grateful and honoured to have internationally acclaimed artist Robyn Backen as our guest speaker. She shared incredible insights into her public art practice, international residencies, and creative process. Her advice to "not create and analyse at the same time" really stuck with me—it was a perfect reminder that making and reflecting are two very different parts of the creative journey.
We also had the chance to spotlight some fantastic local creatives and spaces—just to name a few:
Tiliqua Tiliqua, an artist-run gallery supporting artists at all stages, with their group show Snacks.
The Marrickville Makers Market Trail, which showcased over 100 artists and makers across nine venues in the Bulanaming creative precinct—a vibrant celebration of local talent and creativity.
These events are created with, by, and for our creative community. They only come to life because of the people who show up, share openly and support each other.
Huge thanks to Hopsters Cooperative Brewery for hosting us and helping keep these gatherings running smoothly. It's partnerships like these that make our community stronger.
And thank you to everyone who turned up on the night—it's your presence that makes these gatherings so special.
If you missed this one, don't worry—we'd love to see you at the next meet-up. There's always something new to learn, share and celebrate when we come together.
