About Leonard Smith

From flour to clay, Leonard Smith’s journey is one of craftsmanship, curiosity, and renewal. Beginning his working life at the Mungo Scott Mill in Dulwich Hill, he later turned to ceramics during the Whitlam era, drawn to the tactile immediacy of clay.

His early years as a production potter and teacher evolved into a distinguished career as an academic, mentor, and advocate for sustainable practice. A co-author of The Handbook for Australian Potters, Leonard’s research into Tenmoku glazing took him from China’s Song Dynasty valleys to the archives of Harvard and The Met.

Today, he continues to explore solar-powered firing and earth-sourced glazes—returning, in spirit, to the mill that first shaped his respect for material and process. A life member of the Australian Ceramics Association, Leonard remains a guiding voice in the field, championing both innovation and tradition in Australian studio pottery.
